Basic Tip: WASD camera movement in COH

Shortly after playing C&C 3 for the first time in January (with its good control system), I realized that I wanted to be able to move the camera with the WASD keys in CoH like I was CnC:3.

The point is simple — by using your left hand to control the camera, your right hand and your mouse is free to focus exclusively on unit micro. It takes some getting used to, but it can boost your micro quite a bit. Note that COH is not really the kind of twitchy, micro-intense game that Starcraft is. It’s about thinking, unit placement and mind games. But having a WASD setup can give you an edge, and every little bit helps.

After reading a guide on it by Rowsdower, I downloaded a program called AutoHotKey. If you want to remap your COH camera keys to WASD, you can download the program by clicking here.

After downloading the program and installing it, open a text file in Notepad and put in the following code:

capslock::suspend
w::up
s::down
a::left
d::right

Feel free to add in additional macros or change your toggle on/off key from Capslock to anything you want. I imagine with a little knowledge of writing AutoHotKey scripts you could remap other controls (even your 6-0 keys as alt+1 and alt+2 etc. for more available unit groups). Documentation on how to make your own AHK scripts is well provided with the program download. After you are done making your script, save it as a .ahk file and double click on it when you want to use it. Enjoy being able to make your own controls for COH!
